WASHINGTON, July 26 (UPI) -- The Washington Nationals said Tuesday they have obtained outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Cincinnati Reds for a pair of minor league prospects.
Gomes, one of the key players on Cincinnati's 2010 National League Central championship team, was sent to Washington along with cash in exchange for pitcher Chris Manno and outfielder Bill Rhinehart.
Gomes, who hit 18 homers and drove in 86 runs while batting .268 in 148 games last season, has fallen off to a .211 average with 11 home runs and 31 RBI in 77 games this season.
Manno, a left-hander selected by the Nationals in the 26th round of last year's first-year player draft, has racked up 12 saves in 13 opportunities with Class A Hagerstown this season.
Rhinehart, meanwhile, was batting .283 with 21 home runs and 59 RBI in 89 games with Class AA Harrisburg this year.
