N.Y. Giants sign BC's Mark Herzlich

NEWARK, N.J., July 26 (UPI) -- The New York Giants Tuesday signed former Boston College standout linebacker Mark Herzlich.

"I suggested it," John Mara, the Giants' co-owner, president and chief executive officer, told The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger.

Herzlich, an undrafted free agent, confirmed his signing via Twitter. He missed the entire 2009 season as he battled a rare bone cancer, Ewing's sarcoma, in his left leg a year after being selected ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

He returned to football last season, making 65 tackles and four interceptions in 13 games.

"He's a great kid and he's certainly had his share of obstacles to overcome and we're excited to give him the opportunity," said Mara, also a Boston College alum.
