CLEVELAND, July 26 (UPI) -- Jason Kipnis used his first major-league hit to drive in a game-winning run Monday, rallying the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
The Angels had taken a 2-1 lead in the eighth on Bobby Abreu's two-run homer, but the Indians responded with a comeback in bottom of the ninth to stun the Angels and take the opener of a three-game series.
Michael Brantley led off with a single off Angels closer Jordan Walden (2-3) and stole second. One out later, Travis Hafner belted a double off the center field wall to tie the score.
The Indians loaded the bases when Carlos Santana walked and Jack Hannahan was hit by a pitch. Hisanori Takahashi relieved and, after a force-out at the plate, Kipnis lined a two-out pitch into right field for the game-winner -- his first major-league hit and RBI.
Indians starter Fausto Carmona tossed six shutout innings, scattering four hits while walking three and striking out three.
Dan Haren went 7 2/3 frames for the Angels, yielding only one run on three hits while striking out 10
