INDIANAPOLIS, July 26 (UPI) -- While there's concern four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning will be ready to start the season, the Indianapolis Colts are ready to make him the top-paid player.

Manning is recovering from neck surgery on May 23 to repair a disc in his neck and wasn't able to work out with his receivers during the four-month lockout. The Colts open the regular season Sept. 11 at Houston.

The 35-year-old superstar quarterback has never missed a game during his 13 years with the Colts.

"I think that he's progressing," said Colts owner Jim Irsay, who reportedly is ready to make Manning, the franchise player, the highest paid player in the NFL. "These things vary on how quickly they progress. Our hope is that he'll be ready for Houston."

After his operation, doctors predicted a six- to eight-week recovery. Last year Manning played out the final season of a seven-year contract after off-season surgery for a pinched nerve in his neck.

"He is going to be the highest paid player and he is going to make more than (Patriots quarterback Tom) Brady," Irsay said.
