Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
BOSTON, July 24 (UPI) -- Jarrod Saltalamacchia went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs Sunday, helping Boston hand Seattle a 12-8 defeat for a franchise-record 15th straight loss.
Saltalamacchia contributed two-run singles in each of Boston's two five-run outbursts during the game -- one in the first inning and another in the fifth as the Red Sox banged out 17 hits.
Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez each chipped in with three hits and a pair of RBI while Kevin Youkilis connected for a two-run homer as the first-place Red Sox swept a three-game series from the reeling M's.
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (6-3) earned the win despite yielding seven runs on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings as Boston won for the seventh time in eight games.
Seattle's Michael Pineda (8-7) was pounded for seven runs on eight hits while lasting only 4 1/3 innings.
Brandon Ryan drove in five runs on a three-run homer and two-run double for the Mariners, who broke what had been the team's previous record worst skid, a 14-gamer in September 1992.
