Van Pelt tops Canadian Open after 3 rounds

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 23 (UPI) -- American Bo Van Pelt fired a 5-under-par 65 Saturday, grabbing a one-shot lead after three rounds of the Canadian Open in Vancouver.

The sizzling performance allowed the American to finish at 5-under 205, one stroke better than Canadian Tour regular Adam Hadwin.

It's the fourth time Van Pelt has held a 54-hole lead in his PGA Tour career, but he has yet to convert any of them into victories. He last held a three-round lead at the 2009 Houston Open, but he stumbled on the final day and finished with a share of 19th.

Van Pelt does have one career victory, however, and his 65 Saturday put him in a good spot for his second.

Hadwin, however, will have the backing of the home gallery Sunday, when he will try to become the first Canadian winner of the Canadian Open in 56 years.

Sharing third place at 3-under 207 were Andres Romero (67) and first-round leader Kris Blanks (69).

Sean O'Hair (66), John Daly (67), Aron Price (69) and Geoff Ogilvy (70) were knotted in fifth at minus-2.
