Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 23 (UPI) -- Portland's Mamadou Danso scored an own-goal Saturday and that was enough to hand the Columbus Crew a 1-0 decision over the Timbers.
The game was scoreless until the 79th minute when Portland ran into some bad luck.
A shot by the Crews' Josh Gardner was tipped off the post by goalkeeper Troy Perkins and Eddie Gaven of Columbus flicked the ball toward the net with his heel.
Danso made an attempt to stop the shot but succeeded only in redirecting it into his own net.
With the win, the Crew (8-6-7) moved into a first-place tie in the Eastern Conference with Philadelphia, which has played two fewer matches than Columbus.
Portland, meanwhile, fell to 6-10-3.
