BALTIMORE, July 22 (UPI) -- Ervin Santana took a no-hitter into the sixth inning Friday and Vernon Wells hit a grand slam in carrying the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-1 win over Baltimore.
Santana (5-8) eventually allowed a run on three hits over 7 2/3 innings. He is unbeaten in his last five starts.
Hisanori Takahashi relieved Santana in the eighth and posted a four-out save, his first of the season.
Los Angeles won its third straight after having lost four out of five.
Maicer Izturis broke up a scoreless duel in the seventh with a two-run double and, after Baltimore cut its deficit in half in the eighth, Wells came through with his blast in the ninth.
Mike Trout reached to start the inning on a fielding error by first baseman Derrek Lee, a miscue that eventually made all four runs in the frame unearned. Walks to Torii Hunter and Bobby Abreu loaded the bases with two outs and Wells then homered to center on a 0-1 pitch from Kevin Gregg.
The loss went to Alfredo Simon (2-3), who allowed two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
