New York overcame an early 4-0 deficit, tying it at 4-4 on a two-run homer in the fifth by Carlos Beltran. After St. Louis produced a run in the eighth, Josh Thole again tied it in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single.

Salas (5-4), who has picked up 17 saves in his closer's role this season, worked the ninth in a tie game and was sent out for a second inning. He got Daniel Murphy on a foul pop-up to start the 10th before serving up the game-winning blast to Pagan.

Jason Isringhausen (2-0) allowed a hit and struck out three in two innings to get the win.

St. Louis suffered its third straight loss and has dropped seven out of 10. Matt Holliday drove in two runs and had three hits for the Cardinals.
