MINNEAPOLIS, July 19 (UPI) -- Danny Valencia's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday rallied the Minnesota Twins to a dramatic 2-1 win over Cleveland.
The Twins trailed 1-0 heading into their final at-bats against Indians closer Chris Perez (2-5), but Joe Mauer began the rally by drawing a one-out walk and Michael Cuddyer sent him to third with a double -- Minnesota's first extra-base hit of the game.
After Jim Thome was intentionally walked to load the bases, Valencia sent a looping liner into left field, sending both runners home with the tying and game-winning runs.
The rally made a winner of Glen Perkins (2-1), who tossed a 1-2-3 top of the ninth. Twins starter Francisco Liriano yielded only one run on four hits over six innings.
Cleveland's Justin Masterson hurled 7 2/3 shutout frames but ended up with a no-decision. The right-hander scattered four hits, walked none and struck out six.
Asdrubal Cabrera drove in the only run for the Tribe, who fell into a first-place tie with Detroit atop the AL Central.
