
FRANKFURT, Germany, July 18 (UPI) -- Japan's Homare Sawa was voted the Player of the Tournament at the 2011 Women's World Cup.
Sawa had five goals in the World Cup, winning the Golden Boot for leading in that category, and was captain of the Japanese team that defeated the United States Sunday on penalty kicks in winning the World Cup.
She had a goal in the 117th minute that sent the final into the penalty kick stage.
Japan also took home the FIFA Fair Player Award.
U.S. forward Abby Wambach and U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo finished second and third, respectively, in the Player of the Tournament voting. Wambach had four goals and Solo, who was selected the top goalkeeper of the World Cup, allowed only two goals during group play.
Australian midfielder/defender Caitlin Foord was selected the best young player of the tournament.
