ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., July 18 (UPI) -- Dustin Pedroia's single off Adam Russell in the top of the 16th inning drove in Josh Reddick, giving the Boston Red Sox a 1-0 victory over Tampa Bay Sunday.
Alfredo Aceves (5-1) threw three of the extra innings to collect the win, while Jonathan Papelbon collected his 21st save with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 16th.
The loss got tagged on Russell (1-2), who gave up two hits and a walk in his one-inning outing.
Starters Josh Beckett and Jeff Niemann had kept the game scoreless over eight scoreless innings.
Pedroia got three of Boston's five hits as the Red Sox took the rubber match of their three-game series with the Rays. He also drew a walk among his seven at-bats.
The Red Sox held the Rays to three hits.
The 5-hour, 44-minute game was the longest game in Rays history.
The two teams had totaled 29 runs in the first two games of the series.
