LOUDON, N.H., July 17 (UPI) -- Ryan Newman parlayed his pole position into his first win in 47 races Sunday, holding off teammate Tony Stewart at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Newman had to conserve fuel after leading most of the race and successfully fended off a challenge from his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate in the closing laps.
The team started 1-2 and finished that way for the first time since its 2009 debut.
It was the third win at New Hampshire for Newman and his 15th overall but his first since April 2010.
Denny Hamlin came in third, Joey Logano was fourth and Jimmie Johnson rallied to finish fifth.
Carl Edwards reclaimed his Sprint Cup points lead, establishing a seven-point advantage over Johnson with his 13th-place finish.
Newman's win allowed him to move up to eighth in the rankings.
