ATLANTA, July 17 (UPI) -- Freddy Freeman stroked a game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning Saturday, propelling the Atlanta Braves to a 9-8 win over Washington.
The Braves forged an 8-8 tie in the previous frame on Nate McLouth's solo homer, then won it in the ninth when Freeman's solid liner to right with two outs off Ryan Mattheus (2-1) scored Martin Prado from second.
Brian McCann smacked a three-run homer for Atlanta, which took the rubber match of a three-game series against the Nationals.
Freeman's hit made a winner of Craig Kimbrel (3-2), who tossed a scoreless top of the ninth. Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens was knocked around for six runs on eight hits over five innings.
Nationals starter Tom Gorzelanny left the game with a twisted ankle after a play at the plate in the second inning. He gave up two runs and walked three before exiting.
Danny Espinoza went 3-for-5, hit a two-run homer and added an RBI triple in the Nationals' loss.
