Unified Korean bobsled team gets help

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea, July 16 (UPI) -- A planned bobsled team of North and South Korean competitors received a key endorsement for the 2018 Winter Olympics from the sport's governing body.

The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation, or FIBT, said Saturday it would help a unified Korean squad train -- if the team is actually ever formed.

Federation President Ivo Ferriani told South Korea's Yonhap News Agency the association was anxious to lend a hand if it would help ease relations between the two Koreas.

The FIBT pitched in with a proposed joint German team during the Cold War, but the team never got off the ground.

The proposed Korean team would include a four-man bobsled team with two members from each nation that would race in the Olympics at PyeongChang, South Korea.
