Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

DETROIT, July 16 (UPI) -- Edwin Jackson hurled a shutout and Carlos Quentin went 3-for-4 with a homer Saturday, propelling the Chicago White Sox to a 5-0 win over Detroit.
Jackson (6-7) tossed his second career shutout -- his first came in a no-hitter last season while pitching for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The right-hander scattered nine hits and two walks. He struck out two.
Quentin's solo homer in the second inning put the White Sox ahead for good and Juan Pierre went 4-for-5 with an RBI single for Chicago, which clinched its three-game series against the Tigers.
Max Scherzer (10-5) took the hard-luck loss, surrendering only two runs on eight hits through eight frames, walking none and fanning six for Detroit.
