Phillies put Polanco on disabled list

NEW YORK, July 15 (UPI) -- Philadelphia third baseman Placido Polanco was placed on the disabled list Friday because of lower back problems.

Polanco was voted a National League starter for the All-Star Game but missed the contest because of lower back inflammation.

The Phillies said they put Polanco on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 5, meaning he would be eligible to return to the roster next week.

Polanco is hitting .274 with four home runs and 39 runs batted in 83 games this season.

Philadelphia activated right-handed relief pitcher Ryan Madson from the disabled list to take Polanco's spot on the roster. Madson has been out since June 18 because of a contusion on his pitching hand. He is 3-1 with 15 saves and a 2.03 earned run average this year.

The Phillies also recalled right-handed pitcher Vance Worley from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and said he will start Friday's game against the New York Mets. He was 4-1 with a 2.2 ERA in an earlier stint with Philadelphia. He fills the roster spot of pitcher Scott Mathieson, who was sent to Lehigh Valley last Sunday.
