SEATTLE, July 15 (UPI) -- Derek Holland allowed four hits and struck out eight in throwing his third shutout of the season Thursday, carrying Texas to a 5-0 victory over Seattle.
Holland (8-4) made his 50th career major league start a dominant one, retiring the first 15 men he faced before walking Franklin Gutierrez to open the sixth. Chone Figgins then broke up the no-hit bid with a single, but Holland set down the next three batters to escape trouble.
Seattle put runners on first and second with two away in the ninth, but Holland was left in the game to go for the shutout and he got it when Adam Kennedy lined out to center to end the contest.
Texas extended the longest active winning streak in the majors to eight games and dealt the Mariners their sixth straight loss.
Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz and Mike Napoli each hit a solo homer off Jason Vargas (6-7), who surrendered all five runs on 12 hits in six innings.
