CHICAGO, July 15 (UPI) -- Ryan Dempster allowed four hits over eight innings Friday and the Chicago Cubs scored twice on a dropped pop-up for a 2-1 win over the Florida Marlins.
Dempster (7-6) retired the first eight batters he faced before pitcher Ricky Nolasco doubled and then nine in a row before giving up a single in the sixth. He also allowed two hits with two outs in the eighth inning.
He struck out nine and didn't walk a batter.
Carlos Marmol started the ninth and gave up a walk and two hits, including an RBI single by Logan Morrison, before Sean Marshall got the final out for his second save.
Nolasco (6-6) allowed seven hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven.
The Cubs got a one-out single by Carlos Pena and a double from Marlon Byrd in the fourth inning before Nolasco struck out Geovany Soto.
He seemed to get out of the inning when Alfonso Soriano hit a pop-up into short right field, but the ball dropped between second baseman Omar Infante and right fielder Mike Stanton for an error that allowed Pena and Byrd to score.
