LOS ANGELES, July 12 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday acquired veteran outfielder Juan Rivera from the Toronto Blue Jays for a player to be named later or cash.

To make room for the 33-year-old, right-handed hitter, the Dodgers designated outfielder Marcus Thames for assignment.

Rivera two years ago slugged 25 homers and drove in 88 runs for the Los Angeles Angels. He and catcher Mike Napoli were shipped to the Blue Jays in January for Vernon Wells.

This year, Rivera was hitting .243 with six homers and 28 RBIs before being designated for assignment on July 3.

Rivera, however, compiled much better numbers against left-handed pitching, batting .327 against southpaws.

"Juan will be the right-handed counterpart to Tony Gwynn Jr. in left field, and he can fill in at first base," General Manager Ned Colletti told MLB.com.
