Yankees' Cano wins Home Run Derby

PHOENIX, July 11 (UPI) -- New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano won the 2011 Home Run Derby Monday, smacking 12 shots in the final round to best Boston's Adrian Gonzalez.

Cano's total was a record for a final round in the pre-All-Star Game event, which he won in his first try at Chase Field in Phoenix.

The Yankee's father, former major league pitcher Jose Cano, tossed him his pitches. The elder Cano made six appearances for the Houston Astros in 1989.

Cano bested Gonzalez with a 408-foot homer over the wall in right-center field wall after first tying him with a 472-foot blast, also to right-center.

American League captain David Ortiz of Boston and NL counterpart Prince Fielder of Milwaukee were each eliminated in the second round.

The AL participants cracked a record 76 homers this year to just 19 for the National League.
