BASTAD, Sweden, July 11 (UPI) -- Filippo Volandri advanced to the second round with a victory Monday at the Swedish Open tennis tournament.
Volandri, who won the first set 7-5, moved on after fifth-seeded Tommy Robredo retired with the second set tied 5-5.
Volandri took the first set behind an 11th-game service break. The players swapped a series of breaks through the middle of the second set and Robredo had held in evening the set when he said he couldn't continue.
The Volandri-Robredo pairing was the only main-draw match on Monday's schedule.
There are three Top 10 players in the Swedish Open bracket, including favorite son Robin Soderling, who is seeded first.
Nicolas Almagro, seeded fourth this year, defeated Soderling in three sets in the 2010 Swedish Open finals. Soderling won the event in 2009.
The tournament carries a total purse of $641,000 with $103,000 going to the winner.
