DRESDEN, Germany, July 10 (UPI) -- Abby Wambach scored the equalizer late in extra time Sunday and the United States went on to down Brazil 3-2 on penalty kicks in the Women's World Cup.
The Americans seemed destined for elimination after Marta scored in the extra period for Brazil and time had ticked down to what was essentially the last play of the game in the 122nd minute.
But Wambach rallied the United States -- which was fielding only 10 players -- with a thrilling goal. Megan Rapinoe booted an accurate cross to Wambach, who stretched to head the ball home just inside the post.
That forced a penalty kick shootout, which the United States won 5-3. Goalkeeper Hope Solo made a save on Brazilian defender Daian and the United States converted all five of its attempts.
The come-from-behind win advanced the Americans to Wednesday's semifinals where they will play France. The U.S. squad reached the semifinals for the sixth time.
Marta also scored Brazil's other goal, which came on a penalty kick in the 68th minute that followed a controversial foul. Solo initially made the save, but Marta was awarded another try after the referee ruled Solo had come off the line.
Brazil was eliminated.
