KOBE, Japan, July 10 (UPI) -- Japan finished atop the medal standings at the Asian Athletics Championships in Kobe with 11 golds and 32 total medals.
China came in second in the standing with 10 golds and 27 total medals during the four days of competition that ended Sunday.
About 600 athletes from 45 nations and regions took part in the meet. The event doubled as a qualifier for next month's world track and field championships in South Korea.
One of the competitors from the Asian games who could be a factor in the Worlds is veteran Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang, who won his fourth Asian championship with a time of 13.30 seconds. The world record in the event is 12.87 seconds, which was set in 2005.
China's state-run Xinhua news service said Liu, who won the Olympic gold medal in 2004, was cheered loudly by the crowd as he easily won the finals.
