LEVERKUSEN, Germany, July 9 (UPI) -- Elise Bussaglia scored the equalizer in the 88th minute Saturday and France went on to defeat England 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout at the Women's World Cup.

Bussaglia's goal only 2 minutes from time kept France alive after Jill Scott had put England in front 3-2 in the 59th minute.

France then gained its first-ever semifinal World Cup semifinal berth on penalty kicks. Camille Abily's shot was saved to begin the shootout, but then the French scored four straight times.

England's Claire Rafferty and Faye White both missed during the shootout.

France advanced to face the winner of Sunday's quarterfinal game between Brazil and the United States.
