SAN FRANCISCO, July 9 (UPI) -- Scott Hairston hit a tiebreaking homer to start the ninth Friday and the New York Mets added two runs in inning to defeat San Francisco 5-2.
Hairston's home run added to the recent woes of San Francisco closer Brian Wilson (6-2), who had blown three save chances in his previous four appearances.
The Mets took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a two-run homer by Angel Pagan and the Giants tied it in the sixth when Nate Schierholtz delivered a solo homer.
Extra innings appeared likely when Wilson came on in the top of the ninth, but Hairston hit a 3-2 pitch out to left for his fourth homer of the year.
Pagan then reached second base when San Francisco right fielder Andres Torres misplayed a fly ball for an error. Pagan stole third with one away and scored on a single by Carlos Beltran.
Beltran moved to second on a single by Daniel Murphy and scored the third run of the inning on a base hit to center by Nick Evans.
Pedro Beato (2-1) got the win when the only pitch he threw in the eighth was turned into an inning-ending double play off the bat of Aaron Rowand.
Francisco Rodriguez was perfect in the bottom of the ninth for his 23rd save.
