Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

NEW YORK, July 9 (UPI) -- Derek Jeter homered in the third inning Saturday for his 3,000th career hit in front of a big crowd at Yankee Stadium.
Jeter became the 28th player in history to reach the 3,000-hit milestone and fifth to have played for the Yankees.
Tampa Bay's David Price gave up the landmark homer, which was caught by a fan in the left-field seats. Jeter ran the count to full and fouled off a pitch before sending Price's next offering into the history books.
The former Yankees with 3,000 hits are: Wade Boggs, Rickey Henderson, Dave Winfield and Paul Waner. Those four, however, reached 3,000 while playing for other teams. Yankee immortals such as Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio never accomplished that feat.
