SAN FRANCISCO, July 8 (UPI) -- Barry Zito continued his outstanding return from the disabled list Thursday in carrying the San Francisco Giants to a 2-1 win over San Diego.
Zito (3-1) missed more than two months this season, but since returning to action has won three starts while giving up three earned runs in 21 innings.
He allowed the Padres a run on four hits while striking out seven over eight innings. Brian Wilson survived a leadoff, infield single in the ninth to pick up his 25th save.
San Diego's only run came on Ryan Ludwick's homer in the seventh after San Francisco had taken a 2-0 lead.
Eli Whiteside homered for the Giants in the third and Pat Burrell singled in a run in the sixth.
Cory Luebke (2-3) took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in six innings. It was his sixth career start scattered over two seasons.
