Upsets mark Swedish Open quarterfinals

BASTAD, Sweden, July 7 (UPI) -- Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Johanna Larsson notched three-set upset wins Thursday in quarterfinal action of the Swedish Open tennis tournament.

Zahlavova Strycova, seeded seventh, ousted No. 2-seeded Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 by getting eight service breaks. She won 51 percent of the points both when serving and receiving.

Larsson was a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 winner over fourth-seeded Lourdes Dominguez Lino. Larsson actually won fewer points (101-102) than Dominguez Lino but managed two of her five service breaks in the third set to advance.

Also, Sofia Arvidsson edged Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3) in a match that took more than 3 hours.

Eighth-seeded Polona Hercog claimed the lone straight-set win Thursday, beating Vesna Dolonts 6-2, 6-4 without dropping serve.

Hercog will face Zahlavova Strycova in Friday's semifinals while Arvidsson and Larsson meet in the other semi.
