Wozniacki injured at Swedish Open

BASTAD, Sweden, July 6 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki retired from her second-round Swedish Open match Wednesday because of a shoulder injury.

Wozniacki, who won the first set 6-2, lost the first game of the second set to Sofia Arvidsson but then was forced to end the match when she was unable to serve. The severity of the injury was unknown.

Second-seeded Flavia Pennetta advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Angelique Kerber. Pennetta had six service breaks and won 57 percent of the points when Kerber served.

No. 4-seeded Lourdes Dominguez Lino ran away with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Arantxa Parra Santonja but fifth-seeded Vera Dushevina fell to Johanna Larsson 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-2.

Also seventh-seeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and No. 8 seed Polona Hercog each needed three sets to advance to the quarterfinals. Zahlavova Strycova edged Anastasiya Yakimova 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 and Hercog was a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) winner over Aravane Rezai.

Also Wednesday, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez stopped Nuria Llagostera Vives 7-5, 6-1; and Vesna Dolonts eliminated Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-3.
