BASTAD, Sweden, July 5 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki overcame a poor serving day and advanced Tuesday to the second round of the Swedish Open tennis tournament.

Wozniacki held serve just three times in 10 service games in a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alize Cornet. She managed to win just 44 percent of the points on serve but more than compensated by taking 70 percent of the points when Cornet served.

Wozniacki had nine breaks in Cornet's 10 games serving.

Second-seeded Flavia Pennetta defeated Olivia Rogowska 6-2, 7-5 in her first-round match. Pennetta had 10 aces to support a receiving game that delivered six breaks.

No. 5-seeded Vera Dushevina stopped Mona Barthel 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) and eighth-seeded Polona Hercog beat Anna Tatishvili 7-5, 6-3 but Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez blasted No. 6-seeded Iveta Benesova 6-2, 6-0 in 51 minutes.

In other first-round matches Tuesday, Sofia Arvidsson defeated Andrea Hlavackova 6-1, 5-7, 6-4; Nuria Llagostera Vives beat Alize Lim 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; and Arantxa Parra Santonja took out Tetyana Arefyeva 7-5, 6-3. Also, Sorana Cirstea got past Mirjana Lucic 7-5, 3-6, 7-5; and Angelique Kerber ousted Anna Brazhnikova 6-2, 6-2.
