Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

ANAHEIM, Calif., July 5 (UPI) -- Joel Pineiro held the Tigers to one run over seven innings Monday and the Los Angeles Angels bested Detroit 5-1.
Pineiro (4-3) allowed five hits, walked three and struck out one, earning only his second win in 10 starts as the Angels won for the 14th time in 19 games and remained tied with Texas atop the American League West.
Torii Hunter hit a bases-empty homer in the first inning, putting Los Angeles ahead for good, and Vernon Wells added a solo shot.
Detroit's Charlie Furbush (1-2) absorbed the loss, yielding three runs on five hits before exiting after 4 2/3 frames.
Jhonny Peralta drove in the Tigers' only run with a fourth-inning single.
