WASHINGTON, July 4 (UPI) -- Jayson Werth came home with the game-winning run on a 10th-inning wild pitch Monday, handing the Washington Nationals a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Werth drew a lead-off walk in the 10th from Marcos Mateo (1-2) and went to second on a sacrifice by pinch-hitter Livan Hernandez.
After Carlos Marmol came in to pitch to Ivan Rodriguez, Werth stole third base without a throw, then came home with the game-winning run when Marmol uncorked a wild pitch.
Werth drove runs with a single and a groundout while Laynce Nix added two hits and a pair of RBI for Nationals, who snapped a seven-game home losing streak to the Cubs in the first of a four-game series.
Henry Rodriguez (3-1) was credited with the win thanks to a scoreless top of the 10th. Nats starter Jordan Zimmermann allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings.
Cubs starter Casey Coleman was recalled from Class AAA Iowa before the game. He yielded three runs (two earned) on five hits in a 5 1/3-inning effort.
Carlos Pena went 3-for-4 and Alfonso Soriano contributed a two-run single for Chicago.
