OAKLAND, Calif., July 4 (UPI) -- Michael Pineda and three relievers combined to shut down Oakland on three hits Monday, carrying the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 win over the Athletics.
Pineda (8-5) yielded only one run on a pair of hits, walking two and striking out seven while rebounding from a loss in his previous start against Atlanta and lowering his ERA to 2.58.
Aaron Laffey and David Pauley each tossed one scoreless frame and Brandon League finished up with his 23rd save for the Mariners, who took the opener of a three-game road series.
Josh Bard's solo homer in the sixth forged a 1-1 tie and Justin Smoak drove in the go-ahead run with double in the next frame.
Brandon McCarthy (1-5) took the loss despite allowing just the two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out five over 6 2/3 innings.
Kurt Suzuki stroked an RBI single for the A's.
