MINNEAPOLIS, July 2 (UPI) -- Jim Thome's three-run homer in the first inning staked Minnesota to an early lead Friday and the Twins beat Milwaukee 6-2 for their third straight win.
Carlos Gomez hit a solo home run off Minnesota starter Francisco Liriano in the top of the first, but that advantage was quickly erased on Thome's fifth homer of the season.
Minnesota added two runs in the fifth thanks to two walks, an error and a run-scoring double play. Danny Valencia added an RBI single in the eighth.
Liriano (5-7) gave up only four hits and two runs while striking out seven in seven innings to get the win.
The three straight victories constitute the latest Minnesota streak. Prior to the three wins, the Twins had lost six in a row and before that they had won eight straight.
Yovani Gallardo (9-5) absorbed the loss, surrendering five runs on just five hits in seven innings.
The game was delayed at the start for 2 hours by rain.
