NEW YORK, July 1 (UPI) -- Mark Teixeira doubled home two runs during a three-run first Friday and the New York Yankees used seven pitchers in downing the New York Mets 5-1.
The Yankees won their sixth in a row and handed the Mets their second straight loss.
Starter and winner Ivan Nova (8-4) allowed nine base runners through five innings and left the game with a 3-1 lead. A parade of relievers than fought off the Mets, with Mariano Rivera closing out the game for his 22nd save.
Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson singled to open the game against Jonathon Niese (7-7) and Teixeira doubled home both runners. A double by Robinson Cano brought home Teixeira.
The Yankees did not score again until the eighth, when Eduardo Nunez singled in a run. Alex Rodriguez had an RBI double in the ninth.
