Charles, 47, who clinched the Wolfpack's 1983 NCAA Championship with a game-winning dunk, was driving a tour bus that crashed into a stand of trees on Interstate 40, The (Raleigh) News & Observer reported.

Rescuers were seen using special equipment to free at least one other person trapped inside the bus, the newspaper said.

The mishap caused traffic to be backed up and detoured off the freeway.

Charles' basket gave N.C. State a victory over the heavily-favored "Phi Slama Jama" Houston Cougars of Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde "The Glide" Drexler.

He was selected by Atlanta in the 1985 NBA draft and played one year for the Hawks before continuing his professional career in Europe.

Reports: Canucks sign defenseman Bieksa

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 27 (UPI) -- Defenseman Kevin Bieksa has agreed to return to the Vancouver Canucks for $23 million over five years, multiple reports indicated Monday.

Bieksa, 30, a pending free agent, posted 22 points and was a plus-32 in 66 regular-season games for the Canucks, adding 10 points in 25 playoff games that saw Vancouver come within one win of a Stanley Cup title.

His big moment in the playoffs came when he scored a flukey goal on a carom off a stanchion in double-overtime that lifted the Canucks past San Jose and into the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Canucks will take a salary cap hit of $4.6 million with the deal, The Vancouver Sun reported.

The team didn't confirm Bieksa's signing.

Three other Vancouver defensemen remain unsigned heading into the July 1 free agency period, including 50-point scorer Christian Ehrhoff, veteran Sami Salo and bench player Andrew Alberts.

He was named International League Player of the Week Monday after hitting .429 with two homers and 14 RBI over five contests.

Infielder Adam Everett was designated for assignment to make room for Chisenhall.

Foot pain jeopardizing Nadal's Wimbledon

LONDON, June 27 (UPI) -- World No. 1 and defending Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal said Monday a foot injury may be jeopardizing his chances to repeat at this year's event.

Nadal overcame Juan Martin del Potro in four sets, moving into the quarterfinals, but he told reporters afterward his left foot was bothering him throughout the match.

"I don't know what the problem is, I will get it checked out. I'm worried for sure," he said. "At one moment at the end of the first set I thought I might have to retire."

The 25-year-old Spanish superstar ended up besting del Potro 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

He said he will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging exam on the foot after experiencing pain when hitting his forehand, the BBC reported.

"I felt something really strange when it was at 6-5 in the first set when I called to the trainer. I pushed hard with a forehand and I just felt something crush in the back of the foot. I didn't know what went on.
