EUGENE, Ore., June 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. track and field championships resumed Saturday without U.S. sprinter Tyson Gay, who said he would not compete due to an injury.
Gay had been entered in Saturday's 200 meters, but he withdrew Friday prior to the 100 meters semi-finals due to a nagging hip injury that flared up during his 10.1-second dash in the preliminaries.
"We're just going to focus on getting him healthy," Gay's agent, Mark Wetmore, told The Washington Post. "He's been running with this…for three months. He's not running the 200."
Gay is the only runner to beat Jamaica's Usain Bolt in the past three years and had been expected to face Bolt at the World Championships in South Korea later this summer. Britain's The Daily Telegraph noted that only the top three U.S. competitors will qualify for the Worlds, which means Gay likely won't take part.
