WASHINGTON, June 25 (UPI) -- Davey Johnson, who has managed four major league teams, will take over the Washington Nationals front office sources said.
MLB.com reported that while it is not yet known when Johnson will become the Washington manager, he has been selected to replace Jim Riggleman. Citing front office sources, The Washington Post reported Friday that Johnson, 68, will be named within days.
Riggleman resigned Thursday after Washington had won for the 11th time in 12 games. He was upset that he could not gain an interview to discuss the possibility of the Nationals picking up an option that would extend his contract.
John McLaren was named interim manager early Friday.
Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo said prior to Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox that the team has discussed with the job with Johnson, who currently workers as a senior adviser with the club but has not managed since 2000, the Post said.
Johnson has managed the New York Mets, Cincinnati, Baltimore and Los Angeles Dodgers. He has a 1,148-888 career record, was named American League manager of the year in 1997m and won a World Series with the Mets 25 years ago.
