ST. LOUIS, June 23 (UPI) -- Ryan Theriot's two-run single highlighted an early assault on Roy Oswalt Thursday and the St. Louis Cardinals went on to overwhelm Philadelphia 12-2.
Oswalt (4-6) gave up four runs on five hits in just two innings and then left the game due to tightness in his lower back. The Philadelphia starter was on the disabled list earlier this season with lower back inflammation.
St. Louis won for just the third time in 12 games, pounding out 14 hits and breaking things open with a six-run eighth that featured a three-run homer by Lance Berkman.
Jon Jay homered for the Cardinals and drove in a run during the big eighth inning with a bases-loaded walk.
Theriot's two RBI came during a three-run second that helped St. Louis build a 5-0 lead through three innings.
Chris Carpenter (2-7) took advantage of the support to collect the victory. He gave up a run on five hits while striking out seven and throwing 127 pitches over seven innings.
