NEW YORK, June 22 (UPI) -- New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis said Wednesday he may need season-ending surgery on his injured left ankle.

An MRI exam conducted Wednesday did not show any improvement to the bone bruise he suffered during a May 10 infield collision with teammate David Wright.

Davis said he will miss at least another month as he rehabilitates the ankle but warned it may need a surgical procedure to correct.

"Surgery is like an athlete's nightmare," he told MLB.com. "If it's going to get me on the field again, then that's something we have to do, but obviously we're going to get a second opinion."

If Davis is lost for the season, it would be a major blow for the Mets, who are in fourth-place in the National League East, 10-1/2 games behind first-place Philadelphia. The left-handed batter was hitting .302 with seven homers and 25 RBI in 36 games before sustaining the injury.
