BOSTON, June 22 (UPI) -- Will Venable homered and Clayton Richard held Boston to one run over five innings Wednesday in the San Diego Padres' rain-shortened 5-1 win over Boston.
Venable's solo shot in the first inning put the Padres ahead for good and San Diego tacked on four more in the fourth, during which Venable forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk off Red Sox starter John Lackey (5-6).
Lackey hit Jason Bartlett with the bases full and uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Cameron Maybin to come home with another run in the big inning.
Maybin and Orlando Hudson each contributed two hits in the Padres' interleague win, which was delayed three times by rain before eventually being called after San Diego had batted in the top of the eighth.
Richard (3-9) broke a personal six-game winless streak and logged his first victory since May 16. The lefty worked around eight hits and two walks, striking out two.
Adrian Gonzalez went 4-for-4 with an RBI for the Red Sox, raising his major league-best batting average to .359 as Boston lost the rubber match of its three-game set with the Padres.
