CLEVELAND, June 22 (UPI) -- Travis Hafner's two-run homer gave Cleveland a three-run lead in the sixth Wednesday and the Indians held on to edge Colorado 4-3.
Cleveland avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Rockies, who had defeated the Indians in each of their five previous meetings.
Josh Tomlin (9-4) allowed all three Colorado runs over 6 1/3 innings, and the Cleveland bullpen was nearly perfect relief the rest of the way.
The only runner allowed by any of the three Cleveland relievers came on a two-out double in the ninth, given up by Chris Perez. Ty Wigginton, who accounted for the three Colorado runs on homers in the fifth and seventh innings, then flew out to center to end the contest and hand Perez his 18th save.
The loss went to Jason Hammel (4-7), who allowed four runs on five hits and walked five in six innings. Hammel committed a balk in the third inning that allowed a run to score.
