Condition of beaten Giants fan improving

SAN FRANCISCO, June 22 (UPI) -- Doctors Wednesday upgraded the condition of Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan beaten outside Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Opening Day.

Stow, 42, was breathing on his own after doctors at San Francisco General Hospital removed a ventilator, and his condition was upgraded from critical to serious, Dr. Geoff Manley, chief of neurosurgery, told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Manley said Stow can open his eyes, follow basic commands and is being taken off two of five anti-seizure medicines. "We remain optimistic, but we must be extremely cautious about interpreting his progress," said Manley.

Stow, a paramedic from Santa Cruz, suffered traumatic brain injury when he was assaulted after leaving the Dodgers-Giants game. Giovanni Ramirez, the prime suspect, received 10 months in prison Monday after his parole was revoked for gun possession. He has not been charged in the Dodger Stadium assault.

Police are seeking two other suspects in the attack.
