ST. LOUIS, June 20 (UPI) -- St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols has a broken bone in his left arm and will be out of the lineup 4-6 weeks, the Cardinals said Monday.

Pujols was injured Sunday in a game against Kansas City when he collided with the Royals' Wilson Betemit on a play at first base.

The injury was originally said to be a wrist sprain but subsequent examinations revealed a non-displaced fracture of his left radius. He is expected to be unable to return to the field for about six weeks.

The Cardinals said they would announce a roster move prior to their series with Philadelphia. That series is to begin Tuesday in St. Louis.

Pujols was tied for third in the National League with 17 home runs and tied for 10th in runs batted in with 45. He is hitting .279, well below his career average of .329.

He is in his 11th year in the major leagues and has been voted the NL Most Valuable Player three times -- second three other times, including last year. He's been an all-star selection all but one year and was leading the NL count for the 2011 All-Star Game in the most recent release of voting.
