Baghdatis among winners at UNICEF Open

'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, June 15 (UPI) -- Seeded players Marcos Baghdatis and Xavier Malisse earned quarterfinal slots with wins Wednesday at the UNICEF Open tennis tournament in the Netherlands.

Baghdatis, seeded second, capped the day's action with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Robin Haase. Baghdatis fought off three break points and converted the only two he had in the match for the win.

Malisse, the No. 3 seed, saved 7-of-8 break-point chances in a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win over Jesse Huta Galung. Even with all the break points, Malisse won nearly 70 percent of the points on serve.

Denis Gremelmayr won just two more points -- 119-117 -- than fifth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen but they came in a third-set tiebreaker for a 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) win and a quarterfinals date against Baghdatis.

Also Wednesday, Santiago Giraldo beat Michael Berrer 7-6 (8-6), 6-3; Dmitry Tursunov got past Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-3; and Alex Bogomolov defeated Filippo Volandri 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

In addition to Baghdatis taking on Gremelmayr, Thursday's quarterfinal schedule calls for Giraldo to play Tursunov, Malisse to meet Bogomolov and fourth-seeded Ivan Dodig to go against Teymuraz Gabashvili.
