ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., June 14 (UPI) -- James Shields hurled a five-hit shutout and Justin Ruggiano homered Tuesday, helping Tampa Bay break Boston's nine-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory.
Shields (6-4) tossed his fifth career shutout and third of this season, yielding three walks and striking out five while lowering his earned run average to 2.60.
The Tampa Bay right-hander broke a personal three-game winless streak, allowing only one runner as far as third base as the Rays turned three double plays behind him.
Ruggiano's fifth-inning solo homer broke up a scoreless pitcher's duel and Casey Kotchman added a run-scoring single among his two hits for the Rays, who took the first of a three-game set at Tropicana Field.
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (3-2) absorbed Boston's first loss since June 1, allowing only one earned run on four hits but issuing five walks.
