The Tigers right-hander improved to 6-0 in his last eight starts, striking out 12 while issuing only one walk en route to his fifth career shutout.

The victory enabled Detroit to claim sole possession of first place in the American League Central from the struggling Indians, who lost for the 15th time in 20 games.

Detroit's Andy Dirks went 3-for-4, notching RBI singles in the third and seventh innings.

Cleveland's Justin Masterson (5-5) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits in a 6 1/3-inning start, walking five and striking out four.
