CHICAGO, June 13 (UPI) -- Darwin Barney scored on an infield grounder in the eighth inning Monday, breaking up a scoreless duel and handing the Chicago Cubs a 1-0 win over Milwaukee.
Barney notched a one-out single in the eighth off Kameron Loe (2-6) and moved to third on Carlos Pena's pinch-hit double.
He took off for home when Aramis Ramirez hit a grounder to second baseman Rickie Weeks and reached the plate on a head-first slide just ahead of Weeks' throw to catcher Jonathan Lucroy
The hustling play made a winner of Jeff Samardzija (4-2) after he tossed a scoreless eighth in relief of Cubs starter Ryan Dempster, who shut the Brewers out on four hits and a walk over seven innings, fanning seven.
Carlos Marmol made the lead hold up with a scoreless ninth, collecting his 13th save.
Milwaukee's Randy Wolf also hurled seven scoreless innings, issuing no walks and striking out seven.
The Brewers fell into a first-place tie with idle St. Louis atop the National League Central.
