SAN DIEGO, June 12 (UPI) -- Danny Espinoza and Laynce Nix knocked in ninth-inning runs Sunday, providing the winning margin in the Washington Nationals' 2-0 win over San Diego.
The Nats broke up a scoreless duel in the ninth when Matt Stairs notched a one-out single off Padres closer Heath Bell (2-3). Brian Bixler came in to run for Stairs and went to second on Alex Cora's single.
After Jayson Werth walked to load the bases, Espinoza sent Bixler home with a sacrifice fly and Nix made it 2-0 with a single, on which Cora scored and Werth was thrown out at the plate.
Todd Coffey (2-0) got the victory in relief of Washington starter Jordan Zimmermann, who hurled seven innings of four-hit, shutout ball as the Nats took three wins in a four-game series against San Diego.
Washington held San Diego to a total of two runs in the three contests.
Padres starter Tim Stauffer got a hard-luck no-decision after throwing seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits.
